Engine Rattle

Hi I was after any advice I've owned my ZX636 C1H which as K&N air filter and laser deeptone exhaust for about 2 months in which time I've covered about 2000 miles the bike now as 9100 miles on the clock and lately it seems to have developed a little bit of a rattle which sounds like its coming from the engine. It only happens when in gear with revs (not on tick over) I think it may be the cam chain as read these do rattle but I'm a little unsure.
Any advice would be greatly recieved.
Cheers Rick

ya man, it's the cam chain. Mine does the exact same. Nothing to worry about as the spring in the tensioner is failing it won't hurt the bike. If you want it gone, invest in an APE manual cct.

a cam chain problem would mean it would rattle all the time no matter if it was in gear or neutral , its near impossible to diagnose the noise as it is , can you tell where its coming from in the engine ? does it stop if yu pull the clutch in ? does it get better or worse as engine warms up ? can you hear it when bike is stationary or moving ?

yes it will hurt your engine , the chain flys round the cam chain tunnel wearing away the engine block and dumping little bits of alloy into your oil making a fine grinding paste , some of which will block your oil filter ior oil pump pick up and the rest floating round your engine internals making a "oops" lovely mess of your big end , mains , cam bearings and little ends not to mention your gearbox bearings !!!
you need to sort it pretty quickly or end uo with a rebuild to pay out on

Hi Andy to answer your questions it only happens when bike is moving it stops when I pull the clutch in and it does get better as the engine warms up. I only notice it at slow speeds but this could just be down to it being to noisey with the wind at higher speeds drowning out the noise.

hi , sounds more loike a drive line/clutch problem than anything else , probably the clutch , best to ask around other bikers to have a listen or reccomend a shop that is honest and get them to have a listen to it as near impossible to diagnose a rattle without hearing it , it does sound like the clutch basket may be rattling tho so you may need to get your injectors balanced as that will cause it to rattle a bit

last time my bike was serviced i was talking to the mechanic about the same problem. He said it was the kawasaki tick caused by the reed valves sticking. Hope this might be of help as it is a common problem

would still get a second opinion tho and as for reed valves , don't know what he means by that , far as i know they are only on 2 stroke engines , sounds well odd to me unless its something to do with emisions systems

the reed valves are on the top of the engine in the air suction valves. my c1h is ok but my mates ninja 6 08 plate is showing the same symptoms has been told bike is ok nothing to worry about although annoying hope this helps

i have the same problem, what started out as a little rattle in low revs is now a f*****g really loud rattle, and only goes away over 5000 revs, sounds more like a grinding, could it be the same thing as someone said in an earlier post about the cam chain? the bike is 1998 and only done 12300 miles. i've only had it a few weeks and the little rattle i was told was the clutch where it had been sitting not ridden in a year ( i bought it off a mate kind off )

Any advice from you guys who know things would be gratefully appreciated

take it to a shop and see what they say and then go visit your mate and get some money back for the fix or all back and return the bike to him , as i said before on here its almost impossible to diagnose a noise from this without hearing it

Reed valves are on top of the valve cover to route fresh air from air box into the exhaust ports. It is for emission control in the US and are actuated by vacuum. They are pretty stiff.

Hey Rick have you checked the slack on the drive chain. I mean the chain that drives the rear wheel.
