I am in the process of buying an 82 GPz 750 as a ride, while I rebuild my other bikes.(78 Z1000 and a Moto Martin)
Problem is, its in the south Island (New Zealand) Talking to the current owner, it has a quirk.
When running into a "strong" headwind the bike stutters,
May be starving for air?
May be pressurising carbs?
He has had the bike serviced with special attention to the carbs but no deffinate solution.

Has anyone on forum Had simular problems? Did you solve them?
I cannot "see" the bike other than emails. It looks clean and tidy for its age. The owner sounds a resonable guy, although he did buy a Triumph T595 to replace the GPz.....
The price he's asking for whats on offer I can hardy leave it but this quirk worries me. I have enough problems with the Zed and pod air filters to buy more problems. :fdq

Sounds like a loose wire to me.

Apprently only happens when travelling into a strong headwind, so unlikely to be wiring??? :tthu The bike will arrive from South island next week so I can have a look then. :256

All I can think is maybe a loose connection at the manifold therefore air leaking in when in strong headwind, which could obviously be an easy fix or new manifold.

if there was a leak in the manifold rubbers, it should be apparent all the time, not just into a headwind. The airbox in these models should not be affected with a headwind, its under the seat.....so I doubt that air-pressure is causing any issues...

'stutters' is a hard term to imagine, in describing this problem ? It does sound more like an electrical problem with that word ....

Riding into a strong headwind really should not make any difference to how a bike runs - if it is not tuned properly or has some other problem, you would expect that to occur at all times ?

The only thing I can think of, is that when the engine is being loaded up more at a constant throttle position - ie when riding into a *really* strong headwind - there might be some jetting issue ? Could be running a bit lean under load ? May just need the needles lifted a notch to cure this.

Hi Pete,
Great news! Another GPz750R1 owner! :711

My '82 GPz750 has had problems with running. As it gets hot, it starts to misfire until eventually it just stops. I've not cured it yet, I work away a lot so I can't tell you what caused it.
Here is a thread I started on 750Turbo.com. Read the replies, they may help.
Also try posting on here:

www.KZrider.com

They're a friendly and helpful bunch.
Also, just a thought. It looks like the bike has stock downpipes with a non standard silencer (muffler? Not sure what you call them). What is the silencer from. Do you know? Maybe the carbs don't like it much and need rejetting?

Let us know how you get on.

Gary.

Exhaust is non-standard. Headers appear original but are in "beaten" condition', Mufflers are a generic stainless end can (probably a h***a copy?)
I found that the headers did not seal onto the mufflers, since sleeving the joint and filling it with exhaust paste the leak is gone, and I have not experianced any "carburation" issues. So fingers crossed that was all it is?
I will eventually try to make some stainless headers for her, the pipe seems to work well. Nice deep growl , without being too noisy. ( I leave that to the Z1000 with the Yoshi pipe on it...will never pass a noise test in New Zealand, but hey "Loud bikes Save lives!) :D
