gpz 500 timing; timing marks

hi , can anybody tell me which timing mark i set gpz 500 to. in the manual it gives 2 .1 says C and another 1 says F . i have put another engine .and it just backfires ,manual says it needs timing lining up ,but dont no which 1 to try .any info would be much appreciated

what you want is the No 1 cylendar to be at TDC "top dead center" of the compression stroke. The "F" mark is usually the fire mark. it sound to me like you have it 180 degrees out. rotate the crank shaft 1 turn and then set it.
