bought bike 3 weeks ago. well maintained. only done 300 miles between last 2 mots. went out yesterday and after 5 miles front brake locked up the wheel . brake lever went hard with no play. has nearly new braideds all round. after about 30 minutes of trying to get it home at a forced 15 mph brake suddenly freed up and brake lever went normal with play. i wont want this to happen again at speed so can anyone suggest what i should check for first. thanks. |

It may be an idea to strip and inspect the caliper and check that all the seals and the pistons are all in good condition and that the caliper "floats" freely on the pins (give them a smear of copper grease, but don't get it on the discs or the friction material of the pads).Renew the brake fluid and bleed the brake, the fluid is hygroscopic and will probably have a lot of water content which if left will seize pistons in the caliper. Hope this helps. |

If the caliper pistons are free Make sure the lever is returning to off fully and the master cylinder piston is following it . if all is free i would suspect a small partical of dirt trapped in the pipe work preventing fluid returning . as has been said give it a change of fluid pushing plenty through to flush out the system . Do'nt run the reservoir completely dry as it's some times very difficult to get the system charged up from empty . |

thanks for replies. do you still think fluid should be changed even though this was done last year by previous owner and the bike has done about 300 miles since. |

Have you found anything mechanically wrong ?. Was the brake running hot before the lock up and has it blued the disc .If there is nothing externally which would cause the lock up I would go for change of fluid to flush out the system . Pump it out into a clean glass container and check to see if you've had anything trapped in the fluid lines .Carry a bleed nipple spanner with you then you can crack open the system and free off the brake if it happens again . Be very wary and ride watching out for any loss of free play at the lever . The fact that it 'cured' it's self makes diaognoses tricky sticking pistons and pads rarely free themselves which makes me think its a fluid related or master cylinder problem |

it sounds like you have a lump of debri in the master cylinder on the return valve romove the plunger from the master cylinder and make sure it is clean.it is not allowing brake fluid to return into the master cylinder after brake is realesed. only thing that would normaly affect the travel of brake lever and make sure that you braided lines havent been clamped where they have been bleed before. |
