Hey Rob, Green / Yellow with U.S. trim from 72 Cycle Guide article looks like a pre production prototype....odd stripe on tail, no side cover emblems. My guess is factory was throwing stuff together for testing. I bought a new 73 in the spring of 73 and don't remember colors being an option. A lot of cool info! RP |

I can see that you are thinking Ralph, BUT, as far as I am aware, and I could be incorrect, the first 2000 bikes or so were all the root beer and orange, I wonder it they had even painted the kelly green until later '72, early '73? As far as I am aware we in Australia had the kelly green, but it was not popular, and only a few were imported, the US may have been the same? The tail stripe is thicker like the later V1's, and the tank side yellow area also seems to roll over the top like the early tanks? I love the old magazines, there is so much to learn from them, the main problem with them is the poor quality paper, or printing, if you try to enlarge the photos, it's all blurr. Rob. Now since we are on the subject of paint etc. I have included a photo of a bike in Oct.'72...note the distance from the tank emblem to the bottom of the orange paint? Also the tail looks similar to the kelly green one? Rob.

The kelly green bike seems to be missing the rubber damper for the rego. plate, you could be correct Ralph...a pre production green one?? Keep looking buddy. Rob. |

I agree with Ralph, these are all pics of preproduction Z1 900's maybe even a Z2 in Green???.......... remember these magazines didn't go out til 2-3 months after taking these photos and this would put the pics taken somewhere in June or July. Prime preproduction time! I have these magazines stored away also, just need to dig them out. I too bought a new Z1 it was an early 72 Z1F01263 and I have no pics of the bike, but it had the vacuum ports at an angle like your magazine pics Robin. I was never offered or told of any optional colors for 73 as we hung out at the dealer quite often to see what was next in performance equipment and goodies for our bikes. My first Z1 was stolen and I purchased Z1F00383 to replace her which had the ports straight down like your Z1F00314. These paint schemes I believe were all testing the waters for final approval and the Kelly Green bike I'm sure was a preproduction paint scheme. These are great scans Robin! This is the way we learn how the Z1 was developed and all the unusual characteristics the early bikes had! Keep em coming! Steve |

Something else that I saved from some time ago, I was told that this was what the Kawasaki 750 was going to look like, before it was upgraded to the 900.....I probably wouldn't have bought it.

I have boxes upon boxes of stored magazines, just can't seem to throw them out...... what I mean is I never throw anything out........And I haven't taken the time to learn to scan on this fancy picture printer the wife bought. If I ever get to these boxes, I'll scan what I can. Until then you are bringing back a lot of memories long lost................THANKS Rob! The 750 pic is on Z1 Enterprises site I believe...........
