hey guys, quick teaser for you before i start ripping my bike to bits... it's a gpz1100 e1 model. very similar to the zzr1100 on an old-ish N plate. i've suddenly started experiencing a loss of power at the 4/5000 rpm mark. the bike starts on the button, and rides as sweet as a nut upto about 4k then.... well... remember your 50? took power off you at 29.5mph? it's just like that. no warning, just a loss of all power till it's back below 3k, then it runs rough for a bit.. then makes it to 4k but slows again. any below that and it's as it should be, but what a nuicance... the obvious thing to check would be the main jets... but before i start with that does anyone have any experience of this problem? i'm pretty sure it's fuel starvation, and i've not a great deal of exhaust on it, so i don't think it's choking. i've tried running it with the filler cap loose, i can say it's not a problem with the vacuum creating in the tank, and i've tried running with the tap on reserve, again no improvment. i've got enough fluids in it, it's had an oil and filter in the last few hundred miles and it's very well looked after. a few weeks ago it got into the "very hot" zone on the temp gauge and the fan kicked in. i noticed a wee dribble of coolant escape when i pulled over, but it got refilled, and it was fine on the way home. I'VE NOT DONE MY HEAD GASKET IN HAVE I???? oh %^&&***... any advice gratefully received. ta jim

Jim, As you are pretty specific that it's fuel starvation problem, and that you have eliminated a vacuum in the tank from a blocked breather etc. I'd be inclined to move onto the carbs. Do you run with a filter in line? If not - start doing so, older bikes will collect crud etc. over time - even more so now with the lousy fuel we are getting. Remove and clean the carbs. If that is daunting, at the very least remove the float bowls and clean out any crud that has amassed in there. It may be worth handing them over to a TRAINED mechanic and paying for them to be stripped and ultra sonically cleaned. While your are at it, mention the problem to him as well, he may well be able to suggest items to check and eliminate on your gremlin hunt. HTH. BTW, if your head gasket has gone then it will manifest it's self as emulsified oil, which looks very much like mayonnaise and will stick to you dip stick/oil filler cap. If you find this then stop riding the bike, continued use WILL knacker the main bearings etc. If this is the case then you must do a head gasket job and an oil and filter change!
