Does anyone know if you can fit a newer style tail to this bike, either from a newer version or an aftermarket one to update the look?

Try powerbronze or pyramid plastics, they will probably have some bolt on's.
If not try a tail tidy (R&G) plus an undertray, that will smarten it up.
