Title: Anybody tried this?
Description: Alloy casing repair

philwhitehouse - July 6, 2008 09:19 AM (GMT)
Hi, Ive got a damaged casing on my bike (KX250- see earlier post) and I dont want to scrap the engine (which still runs great just no clutch as swivel is where case is damaged) an so want to carry out a cheap but strong repair, can't find a local repair shop but found this:-

alloy braizing

has anybody tried this stuff, it looks too good to be true and would like to know if anybody has had any sucsess with it or if they know of somewhere in the wolverhampton/birmingham area where I could get a repair carried out.

Hi,
Should be fine on EXTERNAL engine casings only that are removed from the rest of the engine first.
Controlling heat distortion when brasing cast aluminium should be your primary concern - I suggest you use oxy-propane gas because it burns cooler than oxy-acetylene.
Don't attempt to apply heat on internal engine casings which could conduct heat to primary internal components such as the gearbox or crank - any heat-disortion on or near to these components will turn your engine to scrap !
Let us know how you get on......

Hi,its starting to sound a bit scary trying to get this repair sorted, anybody know of a company in the west midlands that could carry out this repair for me, I dont fancy wrecking the engine with my sheer lack of knowledge!!! It would also be easier for me to get this work done by a company as I work away all week and would rather ride the bike than fix it (wouldnt we all).

I would have thought that any competent welder would be able to MIG that for you. Lots of damaged casings are welded up. It's not that unusual! Try Googling aluminium welders in your area.

Just did the Google for you... there's a place in Essington. If they can't do it, they will probably know someone who can. http://www.kempsonfabrications.co.uk/ :kbv
