Hi Guys, I have a 1992 GPZ500s
It has been running fine until several weeks ago when it wouldn't start on the button, so after tracing out all the possible reasons I discovered that two of the magnets had cracked in the rotor and come adrift. I have tried to get a second hand one without success (as disintergrating rotor magnets seem to be a common fault in this model)
My question is, If I replace the rotor minus the two magnets, will I still be able to turn the engine over fast enough to start it but with a reduced charge going to the battery? And If it will start, is it most likely to cause an imbalance to the engine?
If anyone has had a similar problem I'd like to know how they overcame it. Any suggestions/thoughts would be most welcome.
Cheers,
:kawa
Merc,try here
http://www.mandp.co.uk/productInfo.aspx?ca...00S+(EX500)+88-Best to replace it,the circuit will be broken and it will be out of balance.
Thanks Doug, but that site only has the stator available which is not what I want. I can get a new Rotor through my Kawasaki dealership but they are around £300 hence my search for a second hand one. I will be getting rid of the bike soon so I do not wish to spend a lot of money on it.
Try to run it with two magnets missing and it'll be so out of balance tht it'll rattle you teeth up through the top of your helmet.
Try Aralditing the broken magnets back into place and re-balancing the rotor. It might not charge fully, but at least it won't shake you off the seat.

BREAKING POINT ARE BREAKING A GPZ500S. I'VE USED THEM IN THE PAST,REASONABLE AND GOOD SERVICE

I think later GPz500 [D models] have improved rotors because of this problem. You may have to use the later stator as well as some wiring but it has been done.
