hey, as you may have guessed im new here, i am also soon getting a zxr400 for my 17th.
does any one have any tip for second hand ownership of this bike. eg oil changes, milage, what to look for etc.
cheers, steve
I'm not that sure about the mechanics of the ZXR but I can give you some advice after being bitten by buying a shed of a ZXR400!
Look at the history carefully; make a few calls to check major services have been done etc!
If you can, get the fairings off as the hide alot of crash damage.
Take someone who IS mechanically biased to look over the engine, head stock, gearbox, etc.
Don't be taken back by dyno-jet results or additions like new cans; look at it like a synic!
Afetrmarket or ill-fitting plastics or even additional/aftermarket stickers can point towards accident damage.
The ZXR400 is an excellent bike, great starter bike when de-tuned and great fun when it's not reigned in by a restrictor. They're very competant around tracks and as a weekend blast bike but many have been abused for these properties buty the marks of this can be covered. I know of a few lads from Kent who ride theirs like loons and bin them regularly but you'd never tell!
I realise I sound like a terrible bore or the sooth-sayer of doom but I'd hate someone else to get stung like I did with my ex's bike. It cost me £2K but she got it when we split!
After all that I do hope you get a good one and enjoy it.
