Hi, I have just recently bought a 1996 VN800, but i am a bit concerned about the rear brake it is nearly non existing, i have changed the shoes, cleaned and regreased all linkages but it is still the same, has anyone got any ideas on how to fix them or are they just naturally bad rear brakes

You need to make sure that your rear brake arm is set right, or you will have very little or no stopping power on the rear wheel.

Try this.

On the rear center hub you will see a pull arm. (IT IS THE THING THAT YOUR BRAKE ROD GO'S THROUGH)

Take your hand and push it towards the front of the bike untill it stops.

When you do this your brake rod should slide through the middle of it.

You should notice that the set bolt at the end of your brake rod can be adjusted inward untill it touches the brake arm.

Adjust the nut so that your brake arm only moves about a 1/4 inch when you push on it with your hand.

Be sure not to adjust it to tight.... OR YOU WILL NEED NEW BRAKES! :laf
