Title: New Member and New (in pieces) Z650

Raven - October 4, 2007 04:16 PM (GMT)
Hiya everyone,
I wanted to introduce myself and say HIYA :D
I've just bought a Z650, she is virtually in pieces after someone who was not mechanically minded took her apart after she started to smoke a bit.. Tis my intention to restore the poor girl to her former glory..
I fell in love with Z650's over 20 years ago and since I started riding bikes myself this summer (I've always been a passenger!) I decided I wanted a real project to get my teeth into, and because of my love of Z's I just had to get one..
Luckily I love working on bikes, and will quite happily spend hours in the garage helping my other half while he works on his bikes, although I will now be working on the Z..
At the moment I'm starting to sort through the huge box of parts which is my engine and deciding exactly how I want the restoration to go.. I would like to restore her to as close to original as possible and my wish list is getting quite impressive!!
I've read the posts on here with interest and have saved all the web addresses as they will definatley come in handy in the near future.. No doubt I'll have a few questions of my own as time goes on..
Bye for now..

:789 RAVEN.
BEFORE YOU START TO REBUILD THE ENGINE,GET A NEW CAMCHAIN AND CHECK THE STARTER CLUTCH FOR WEAR,AS IT SUFFERS FROM 'FREEWHEELING' AT HIGH MILEAGES AND IT REQUIRES A PARTIAL ENGINE-STRIP TO SORT.
HAVE FUN.

Hiya..
Thought I would give you an update on how my poor Z is doing... well.. she is now in even more pieces than when I first got her!!!! The forks and front end are off as is the rear end.. next weekend the frame will be cleaned up ready to begin repainting..
I have changed my mind about her I want her to look.. I will be keeping her fairly original but will be changing certain things like the rear swing arm (now have a chrome one with a rear disc brake and wheel, got it off ebay for £42 including £20 postage!!), the rear end wont have the big mudguard and light as I want a little one up under the tail piece.. She will still look like a Z but with a few tweaks to make her look the way I want..
I'm so glad the weather is warming up.. its much better to work ourside in a garage with no heating!!! I am going to look forward to getting my teeth stuck into her now
I also passed my bike test 3 weeks ago :sqj and am now bike shopping for a new bike
Well thats it for now..

Well.. I got my new bike but a Honda though.. I bought a 1992 CBR400RRN in the Urban Tiger colour scheme... She's my new baby and I love her to bits :D ...

Work on the Z is slow.. what with work and all.. and the weather hasnt exactly helped things along.. I cant wait till it gets warmer and stops blinkin raining and snowing!!!!

Good luck with the Z, well done on passing your test :qzq ,

I'm in the same boat as you with my old Zephr 550, Bought it as a non-runner with a ceized engine, stripped it down found one of the barrels must have been getting to much heat and has melted/distorted a bit and ended up with a 2mm coating of corrosion from lying about for just over a year, took about 45 minutes to put it back right with a fine file, Also got a gear selector shaft oil leak (major oil leak!!!!)

Hopfully once it's finnished it shoul look like a Zephyr but more futuristic with an LED tail light, custom single seat unit and quite a few other bits and bobs [top secret] B)

Hopefully i'l be finnished it as soon as possible, will have to post some stuff in the wanted section.

I like the LED lights as well.. I put some on my 125 when it kept frying bulbs.. no problems after that!!! I want to put them on my Zas well..
