Title: 2007 Vulcan 2000 LT
Description: Clunk and Bird chirp

captain-mark - August 6, 2007 06:42 AM (GMT)
OK guys, I'm new to all this belt drive, so hit me hard.
Just got this bike new. I have already had the first 600 mile service done. got about 1600 on it now.
1. I noticed if you let the speed get below 50 in 5th it clunks pretty good. Am I lugging her?
2. At speeds of 55 to about 68 I get what I would call a bird chirp! Is this normal to the type of valve configuration for this bike?
3. How far off is the speedo on the metric cruisers?
I would like to get a speedo healer and would like to know about where to start on setting it up. I figure about 11%. would I be close?
Happy trails and thanks.

My Vulcan 2000 will also clunk / ping if I lug it...keep the revs up moderately. In the long run its easier on the engine. The speedo is indeed 10-11% off, I checked. As far as belt drive is concerned, I would not worry about it. I put it in between shaft drive (best) and chain (worst...too many stories about broken chains) in my humble opinion. The bird chirp is still a mystery and you'll probably see other posts about, but mine does it too. I have heard it on HDs (Road King) as well. It does not appear to be anythin to worry about.

You were lugging it and as far as the chirp. I took a trip from here in Montana to DC (Run For The Wall Event) and along the way I developed the same chirp. Eventually I found the problem and it was the belt had gotten loose and a little out of line. The owners manual will show the correct tension.
I also used my Garmin Zumo 550 GPS on the trip and the bike was +- 7 mph faster than the actual speed and also compared speed with the other bikes I rode with. 27058 miles and going strong

Enjoy the ride beneath your hide and remember its not the trip, but the journey!
