Title: what is it?

frog9991 - August 4, 2007 08:53 PM (GMT)
hi all,
i've just bought a 1987 erm...well,the log book calls it a ZX 400-C2,but on the crankcase it's marked GPz400.can anyone help me identify it as i need to buy some parts?any help at all would be appreciated, especially parts sources,as i understand kawasaki don't keep spares for bikes over 10 years old
thanks

WHAT YOU HAVE IS AN IMPORT.THE GIVEAWAY IS THAT ITS 400CC,AS IN JAPAN THE LICENCE BANDS ARE FAR NUMEROUS.ONE CRITERIA IS THAT IF YOU DROP IT,YOU HAVE TO SHOW YOU CAN PICK IT UP AGAIN UN-AIDED.
THE JAPANESE MOT (J-TEST) IS FAR MORE RIGOUROUS,WHEN THESE VEHICLES FAIL,THEY TEND TO BE SNAPPED UP BY IMPORTERS.
ITS POSSIBLE THAT THIS MODEL USES A GPZ ENGINE OR THAT THE ORIGINAL WAS REPLACED.
AS HIGGSY SAYS CHECK YOUR DOCS.

The ZX400-C2 is the factory model code.
The GPz400 is the sales name for the bike.

There is nothing dodgy, just that different countries may have had a different name for the bike.

The 400 would indeed have been an import, probably from Japan. You may well have a light on the speedo or similar that would come on at the Japanese speed limit of 50MPH.

Most chassis parts etc will be interchangeable with the GPz600, engine parts should not be too hard to find.

The black bike in the top picture is the same as a ZX400-D model[GPz400]

The white bike in the lower picture is still a GPz400 but an earlier model.

Just as an example, the ZX600 factory code applies to all 600 sport bikes from a GPz600 of the 1980's through to the ZX-6R of today.

The suffix letter changes each model, the number each year after the model is first introduced.
EG ZX600-A[1 to 4] = GPz600: ZX600-C[1to?]=GPX600R:ZX600-E[1 to 14]=ZZR600:ZX600-J[1 to ?]= ZX-6R

However, things can get VERY complicated. The GPZ500S/400S are two cylinder water cooled engines and are coded EX500/400. The GPZ500R is a four cylinder water cooled engine and is coded ZX500, but the GPz400 is a four cylinder air cooled engine and is coded ZX400.
Also found reference to the ZX400D which is water cooled, and the ZX400C being air cooled, but both being marketed at the same time!

I found this list on the Z-POWER website, helps to clear up some confusion

wow you guys r helpful thanks!I have to sa,though, mine looks nothing like either of the bikes in the above pictures. It has no fairing & as you should be able to see from my picture(if I've been able to upload it :D)it has a double cradle tubular frame unlike the ones in the pictures.the other point is,according to the v5,the date of 1st registration is 19/05/87 the same date it was 1st registered in the uk which rules out the grey import option I should think?
ps can't find a way to upload my pic d'oh

basically a naked GPz, but air-cooled.

The market name in the UK was Z400F-II

If you wanted originality, I think that rectangular headlamp is pretty standard in kawasaki's world.
