Title: Greetings
Description: New (old) bloke

Hello

I'm al, late 40's living just outside Bristol.

i have had my GPZ 305 standing in the garage for quite a while now, (years)
It became unreliable - not starting, though when it was going it ran fine.
I had a 'classic' 500-4 for a while, and a CBR 600, then kids came along. I've been a lazy car and van driver for a long time now.
I got a big (ex loading shovel) 12V battery from work, and that's on charge now and i decided i want to try to start the old (D plate) GPZ up. No kickstart of course  so any tips, thoughts, suggestions (not too much mockery please) would be welcomed!
I dont want to start spending loads of money on it if it wont even cough into life.
I'll get some fresh petrol and rinse the tank out, and clean the plugs, should i try cleaning the carbs? with what?
I have a Kawasaki workshop manual for it, though i'd prefer a Haynes or Clymer (if one is available?)

Cheers for any input!

Hi Clevedonal
I am a new member myself, used to have a Triumph Trophy 1200.
It had been standing for quite a few years before I got it, had only done 5500 miles.
Anyway a new battery, fresh petrol and the bike started, but very lumpy.
Tried cleanining the carbs but to no avail, tuirned out to be one of the coils failing under load.
Stripped the carbs anyway and found very littel gunge in them, so I would suggest a check of electrical system before doing anything else
Regards

(Thanks for the Welcome note Wizz)

Thanks for the electrical advice Ditchpump - i really just want to see if the bike will start at all before embarking on any sort of spending. How would i go about checking for a problem in the coils prior to attempted start?
I connected the battery and got neutral/sidestand light - and a very sluggish turnover, then my cheapcrap jumper lead gave up!
Is it worth a squirt of oil into the tappet adjusting holes and/or cylinders - bearing in mind that it's been stood up for a long (long) while. (i could at least turn the old 500-4 over on the kickstart before turning ignition on to move a little oil around... )
